Judges 10:10-14 -And the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, saying, We have sinned against thee, both because we have forsaken our God, and also served Baalim. And the Lord said unto the children of Israel, Did not I deliver you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines? The Zidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and ye cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand.Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation.
Have you ever had a really bad day? Gotten in a car accident? Been really sick? What is the first thing we tend to do in those situations? If you are anything like me or the people I know, the first thing that happens when we are in distress is that we cry out to God for deliverance. I think this is a good thing to do, after all, God is the one who can solve our problems. But there is an issue with this just like there is with what the children of Israel did.
The Children of Israel had forsaken God and served other gods. They had no regard for God's law or standards. They didn't care about how their actions were affecting God. Yet now when they were in trouble they decide to turn to him. We do the same thing all the time. Our lives are lived without putting thought into how our behaviors are affecting God, or what He thinks. We let other things be our god. Our hobbies, our phones, our friends, sports, etc. We put these things before God, letting them become our god. But when something bad happens to us we decide to turn to God.
After a while of us doing this I believe we get the same response from God that the Israelite did in Judges 10:14 Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation. After delivering us over and over again and our attitutde toward God being unchanged, God decides that he is done delivering us and that it is time for our little g god's to do their part. The problem is our hobbies, social media or ever our friends wont be able to deliver us from distress, so why do we let them become the gods of our life?
If we want the power of God in the hard times we need to make him real in our everyday lives. Putting him first and making him the God of our day, not letting other things come between us and Him.
Wouldn't it be a great thing if we were walking so close to God everyday that when we had a hard time, our prayer life, church attendance, and devotional time didn't change at all. That we were walking so close to God that we didn't have to ask for forgiveness and change how we were acting to see God's power in our lives. Lets break our pattern of worshiping idols and intentionally put God first in our lives. Everyday, not just when we are in distress.
